Letter from the Vice-Chairman:

Dear OWASP Community,  

I hope you are enjoying your summer, mines been pretty busy, getting married, traveling to Vegas and the board elections. August has been quite a busy month for the foundation. Attending BlackHat and DefCon as part of our outreach program, the upcoming elections ( I have to add, there were some really good questions from the community) and planning for the next two Global AppSec Conferences in September, it's been crazy. We the board would like to thank the staff and without naming any names (Jon McCoy) for their efforts during BlackHat and DefCon. I was there, on the stand, he did a good job of representing our community.

Two days prior to BlackHat and Defcon the board met as part of our second face to face meeting of the year. This was two days well spent, collaborating on some of the burning topics, but also how to move forward. At the beginning of the year, we set out our strategic goals. Even though these goals are part of our everyday OWASP life we decided to put a name against them to champion them, below are our goals and who will be championing them going forward:

Some of the Global board members will be attending both our Global AppSec Conference in Amsterdam but also in DC. We will hold our next public board meeting during the Global AppSec Conference in Amsterdam if you haven't already done so I would encourage you to both attend and spread the word of the conference. There are some great keynotes/ speakers and trainers lined up.

Congratulations to the Global AppSec Tel Aviv 2019
Capture the Flag Winners

 
For two full days, 24 competitors from around the world attacked various challenges that were present within the CTF activity held at Global AppSec Tel Aviv 2019. The competition began with a handful of competitors running neck and neck with two competitors, 4lemon and vasya, at the top, slowly gathering more points in their race hoping to win it all. At the last moment, they were overtaken by Aleph who swooped in and took away the victory for himself with a total score of 29 points! 

We would like to thank all of the individuals who participated and once again, congratulations to the top 3.

THE OWASP FOUNDATION HAS SELECTED THE TECHNICAL WRITER FOR GOOGLE SEASON OF DOCS by Fabio Cerullo

The OWASP Foundation has been accepted as the organization for the Google Seasons of Docs, a project whose goals are to give technical writers an opportunity to gain experience in contributing to open source projects and to give open-source projects an opportunity to engage the technical writing community.

During the program, technical writers spend a few months working closely with an open-source community. They bring their technical writing expertise to the project's documentation, and at the same time learn about open source and new technologies.

The open-source projects work with the technical writers to improve the project's documentation and processes. Together they may choose to build a new documentation set, or redesign the existing docs, or improve and document the open-source community's contribution procedures and onboarding experience. Together, we raise public awareness of open source docs, of technical writing, and of how we can work together to the benefit of the global open source community.

After a careful review and selection process, the OWASP Foundation has picked the primary technical writer who will work along the OWASP ZAP Team for the next 3 months to create the API documentation of this flagship project.

DNSSEC, From An End-User Perspective, Part 3

In the first post of this DNSSEC series, I have shown the problem (DNS vulnerabilities), and in the second post, the "solution." In this third post, I am going to analyze DNSSEC. Can DNSSEC protect the users against all of the attacks? Or just part of them? What about corner cases?

The following list are the attack types from the first post, where DNSSEC can protect the users:

  • DNS cache poisoning the DNS server, "Da Old way"
  • DNS cache poisoning, "Da Kaminsky way"
  • ISP hijack, for advertisement or spying purposes
  • Captive portals
  • Pentester hijacks DNS to test application via active man-in-the-middle
  • Malicious attacker hijacks DNS via active MITM

The following list are the attack types from the first post, where DNSSEC cannot protect the users:

  • Rogue DNS server set via malware
  • Having access to the DNS admin panel and rewriting the IP
  • ISP hijack, for advertisement or spying purposes
  • Captive portals
  • Pentester hijacks DNS to test application via active man-in-the-middle
  • Malicious attacker hijacks DNS via active MITM

If you are a reader who thinks while reading, you might say "What the hell? Am I protected or not???". The problem is that it depends… In the case where the attacker is between you and your DNS server, the attacker can impersonate the DNS server, downgrade it to a non DNSSEC aware one, and send responses without DNSSEC information.

Now, how can I protect against all of these attacks? Answer is "simple":
  1. Configure your own DNSSEC aware server on your localhost, and use that as a resolver. This is pretty easy, even I was able to do it using tutorials.
  2. Don't let malware run on your system! ;-)
  3. Use at least two-factor authentication for admin access of your DNS admin panel.
  4. Use a registry lock (details in part 1).
  5. Use a DNSSEC aware OS.
  6. Use DNSSEC protected websites.
  7. There is a need for an API or something, where the client can enforce DNSSEC protected answers. In case the answer is not protected with DNSSEC, the connection can not be established.

Smuggler - An HTTP Request Smuggling / Desync Testing Tool


An HTTP Request Smuggling / Desync testing tool written in Python 3


IMPORTANT

This tool does not guarantee no false-positives or false-negatives. Just because a mutation may report OK does not mean there isn't a desync issue, but more importantly just because the tool indicates a potential desync issue does not mean there definitely exists one. The script may encounter request processors from large entities (i.e. Google/AWS/Yahoo/Akamai/etc..) that may show false positive results.


Installation

Smuggler at a minimum requires either a URL via the -u/--url argument or a list of URLs piped into the script via stdin. If the URL specifies https:// then Smuggler will connect to the host:port using SSL/TLS. If the URL specifies http:// then no SSL/TLS will be used at all. If only the host is specified, then the script will default to https://

Use -v/--vhost <host> to specify a different host header from the server address

Use -x/--exit_early to exit the scan of a given server when a potential issue is found. In piped mode smuggler will just continue to the next host on the list

Use -m/--method <method> to specify a different HTTP verb from POST (i.e GET/PUT/PATCH/OPTIONS/CONNECT/TRACE/DELETE/HEAD/etc...)

Use -l/--log <file> to write output to file as well as stdout

Use -q/--quiet reduce verbosity and only log issues found

Use -t/--timeout <value> to specify the socket timeout. The value should be high enough to conclude that the socket is hanging, but low enough to speed up testing (default: 5)

Use --no-color to suppress the output color codes printed to stdout (logs by default don't include color codes)

Use -c/--configfile <configfile> to specify your smuggler mutation configuration file (default: default.py)


Config Files

Configuration files are python files that exist in the ./config directory of smuggler. These files describe the content of the HTTP requests and the transfer-encoding mutations to test.

There are no input arguments yet on specifying your own customer headers and user-agents. It is recommended to create your own configuration file based on default.py and modify it to your liking.

Smuggler comes with 3 configuration files: default.py (fast), doubles.py (niche, slow), exhaustive.py (very slow) default.py is the fastest because it contains less mutations.

Payloads Directory

Inside the Smuggler directory is the payloads directory. When Smuggler finds a potential CLTE or TECL desync issue, it will automatically dump a binary txt file of the problematic payload in the payloads directory. All payload filenames are annotated with the hostname, desync type and mutation type. Use these payloads to netcat directly to the server or to import into other analysis tools.
